Wish List for Joint DVB-I HbbTV Working Group

Host: Bram Tullemans EBU & Ranjeet Kaur DTG Reporter: Bram Tullemans EBU & Ranjeet Kaur DTG Session goal: To define a shared “wish list” of topics and priorities for a potential joint working group between DVB and HbbTV Association, focusing on: • Aligning DVB-I and HbbTV in an all-IP environment • Identifying common use cases (e.g., content discovery, app integration) • Highlighting gaps, overlaps, and differences between the two ecosystems • Preparing the ground for future collaboration or standardization work


Summary of discussion:

A joint DVB-I / HbbTV working group is not just beneficial it’s necessary to ensure a coherent, scalable, and user-friendly transition to IP-based television services.

Strong alignment between DVB (DVB-I) and HbbTV Association around IP-based service delivery and discovery

  • Need for better interoperability between DVB-I services and HbbTV applications
  • Key focus on content discovery, including on-demand, deep linking, and cross-platform navigation
  • Discussion on app integration, such as launching HbbTV apps via DVB-I and enabling apps without tuning to broadcast channels
  • Recognition of data model differences (XML vs JSON) requiring alignment or mapping
  • Importance of user experience improvements, including persistent settings and seamless broadcast-to-IP transition
  • Consideration of device capabilities and limitations, especially for IP-only receivers
  • Interest in analytics, advertising, and monetization in an IP environment
  • General agreement that closer collaboration or a joint working group would be beneficial
  • Definition of APIs / mapping functions
  • New user driven formats like Vertical Video
