Enabling new User Experiences with DVB-I
Host: Peter Lanigan Reporter: Peter Lanigan Session goal: Discuss how DVB-I could be extended to support new kinds of user experience
Summary of discussion:
The session was well attended, including by people with experience of implementing UIs for DVB-I. There was a lively discussion with many contributors. Points raised in the discussion included:
- Accessibility: How to make new features part of the simple TV experience?
- Personas, user journeys – would be helpful to define UX more
- Channel based v content based interface
- semantic search endpoint / recommendation end point
- search by genre and other parameters
- including search etc by AI agents
- User profiles – additional parameters for search
- Accessibility – requirement for subtitles, audio description, …
- Viewing history and preferences
- Privacy
- Enable personalisation
- Include DVB-I content in TV search and recommendations
- Service types – TV, radio, data, …
- How to order search results?
-
- Up to the implementation – but DVB could ensure all the relevant information is available
-
- Ensure DVB-I services and content can be included in search and recommendation
- The query might come from the TV or from a server
- Useful for search engine to know what the query is for – search, recommendation, …
- Is the metadata complete? Image types?
- Preview/trailer?
- Image centric UI – need good quality images
- User ratings, reviews?
- User testing directly by DVB?
- Minimum data set for metadata providers
- German DVB-I spec defines a minimum set for all providers in the service list
- The more metadata that’s available, the easy it is to find content – e.g. Actor names
- UIs have to deal with legacy EIT metadata as well
- Service list synopsis – describe the channels that are available
- UIs should be simple – minimise the number of clicks
- Also to e.g. Select different audio and subtitles
- Different kinds of UI for different users?
- Minimum requirements for remote controls?
- Signalling of next episode – could be used by UIs
- How should EPG look like when service type is an application?
Next steps:
Discussion will continue in CM-I, and at an online workshop on 16th April at 14:00 which will be open to non-members.
In the chair’s opinion, the following topics already look promising for further work:
– semantic search endpoint / recommendation end point
– search by genre and other parameters
– search by AI agents
– personalisation and user profiles
– previews/trailers in the content guide
– minimum data set for metadata providers.
